How to do your own Viral Self-Organized Visual Assembly

Published on: June 1 / 2025

A spontaneous Visual Assembly took place in New York, organized by local artists and activists with help from Miles Grant and his friends. It reminded me of the very first assembly David and I did about the City of Care.

They simply laid out chalk and started drawing. Passersby and children joined in almost immediately. In just 15 minutes, strangers imagined gardens, schools, hospitals, and homes — connecting them into something that felt like a city made together.

It didn’t last long. Security interrupted, and the drawings were washed away. But the moment showed how little it takes to begin: just a bit of space, a few people, and some chalk.

What if we did this everywhere? Photographed and shared the ideas? This one is already on the Units of Care map.

Let’s keep going.
